Wow, the concept of Learning Lifeguards is so timely. I feel that educators have been trying to either help students on their own or to gather their own team to help at a grassroots level. Sherri Nelson sets out a clear path, shows what we can do now and in the long-term and refutes so much of the inevitable pushback. My favorite sections are the Hack in Actions, which give us hope that it is truly possible.
This is an excellent read to share with a team. Not only are their solid strategies and ideas, but also actionable items that can immediately benefit student learning. The storyline and theme make it easy to quickly move through the book and stay engaged.
Learning Lifeguards has an easy-to-read, yet detailed format laying out ways in which we, as educators, can help all of our students, especially those who struggle the most. The book provides the reader with detailed steps for the implementation of high expectations in the classroom, positive student and coworker relationships, and extra support at school and at home. It then goes on to outline real situations that encourage the reader to consider and recognize the steps that were taken after implementation occurred. As education continues to be challenging, the goal throughout the book is to assist educators in creating a community of success for all students with a realistic plan to meet that goal.
